Green presents Terrorists and Convenience Stores: When Social Trust is Threatened posted at Trust Matters, saying, "Our response to socially-hostile acts in a networked world has been to systematize the human networks, instead of humanizing the systems. In other words, we now treat everyone like a terrorist. The problem is, we quickly become hostage to the very thing we tried to prevent. We're now drowning in costly solutions, trying to boil the ocean."

How to recover files deleted with Shift Del

: security
In this article I'll talk about a recovery tool for Windows, since Unix users don't have problems like this frequently, given the Unix systems' nature.
Active@ File Recovery

You can download it here. Since it's a demo tool, there are a few limitations such as you just can recover 65kb file size.

Lab

1.Download and install Active@ File Recovery in your computer.

2.Search for deleted files

3.Recover a file (until 65kb)

4.Verify the file integrity.

As you can see, this file recovery software is really easy to use, intuitive and fast. It works with the following file systems: FAT, FAT32 and NTFS.

You can use it to recover IDE, SATA, SATA II and SCSI Hard Drives, floppy disks and also CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Sony MemoryStick, USB Hard Drive and USB Flash Memory.

You will find the following features:
File Recovery - Recovers deleted files and folders from an emptied recycle bin, as a result of bypassing the Recycle Bin (for example when using [Shift] [Delete]), files that have been lost by formatting, damaged by virus attack, a malicious program, or a power failure.
Partition Recovery - Data recovery after disk partitions loss / format / damage (just with Active@ File Recovery Professional).
Photos Recovery - Recovers photos, pictures deleted from flash media, or lost due to formatting a memory card.
Unbootable System Recovery – Active@ File Recovery Enterprise version installation package contains a CD/DVD ISO image that you can burn to get a bootable CD or DVD with a lightweight version of Windows Vista (c) running in RAM (WinPE 2.0).

It's a valuable tool for home users, enterprises and professionals: the full licensed software starts at U$29,95 for the Standard version.

Internet Attacked! (Did Anyone Notice?)

: security
Hackers last night mounted the most significant attack since 2002 on the computers that direct traffic on the internet, it emerged today.

The hackers, believed to be from Asia, bombarded the 13 computers, or root servers, that serve as the internet's central address books.

Brian Krebs of the Washington Post "Security Fix" blog reports:

At around 7 p.m. ET on Monday, three of the Internet's 13 "root servers" -- the computers that provide the primary roadmap for nearly all Internet communications -- came under heavy and sustained attack from a fairly massive, remote-controlled network of zombie computers. These are machines infected surreptitiously with programs that allow criminals to control them remotely. The zombies were programmed to try to overwhelm several of the root servers with massive amounts of traffic.

Among the apparent targets was a root server controlled by the Department of Defense Network Information Center. There is also evidence to suggest the attackers targeted the servers responsible for managing the stability of the ".uk" and ".org" domains.

A number of technologists I spoke with who helped defend against the attack said it's too early to say definitively where the attack came from, but this perspective from an operator responsible for maintaining one of the root servers suggests that South Korea, China and the United States were the biggest source of computers used in the attack

From the reports I'm reading now, there appears to be no evidence of damage.

Did you noticed? It seems internet has became invunerable. Better, as my husband Renato said: it has became organic.

Gates challenging the hacker community

: security
After a long break, I am back.

We had a great time in Brazil. We visited our relatives, our friends, our favorites restaurants...

But... As Dorothy use to say: "There's no place like home"

And I realized that I was born in the wrong country. Brazil is too hot for me.

But... talking about technology, did you read the Bill Gates's Newsweek interview?

From Engadget:

What the hell were you (Bill Gates) thinking telling Newsweek that "Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine."?

We understand the few questions preceding interviewer Steven Levy's query about Vista's security compared to OS X's may have gotten you a bit riled up, but let's be honest for a second. We follow this stuff fairly closely and we haven't seen or heard about any globe-trotting worms or prominent security threats to Apple's operating system in quite some time; one of the highest risk threats we've heard about in recent memory turned out to be a hoax. We're glad Vista is enhancing Windows security (and usability), we really are, but we really think you and Jobs and Hodgman should go have a few drinks and just enjoy your filthy richness or something.

"I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine." Sounds like Bills throwing' down a challenge to me! Release the hounds!

I mean, immediately after the interview, Gates goes back to living under his rock.

Seriously, Windows would also be a lot more secure if it weren't for those 3rd party apps, you know, like Outlook and Internet Explorer.
